Sorting the list of installed Safari extensions

I have read many posts and complaints online about how difficult it is to sort the list of installed extensions in the Safari preferences, and that they cannot be sorted by other ways than the enforced sort-by-install-date. It has been suggested that removing and reinstalling the extensions in the desired order is the only way to do it.

There is a better, simpler and quicker solution that does not force you to reinstall the extensions and lose configuration data.

The sort order is determined by the order of items in an array in the Extensions.plist file located at ~/Library/Safari/Extensions/Extensions.plist.

With the free trial version of PlistEdit Pro you can sort the list in the plist file with just a few clicks. Here is how:

  • Quit Safari and make a backup copy of Extensions.plist in case you need to revert any changes.
  • Open Extensions.plist with PlistEdit Pro. ...

Dolphin Browser makes leap from Android to iPhone

One of Android's better-known apps, Dolphin Browser, has been given a long-requested port to the iPhone (free, App Store). The iOS version of MoboTap's software uses Apple's WebKit engine but brings features that have yet to reach Safari. It already has tabbed browsing ahead of iOS 5, a Firefox-style address bar with search results, and gesture-based shortcuts for common tasks....

HP says PC group spin-out more likely than sale

HP in a statement Monday said its possible separation of its PC business would more likely involve a spinoff than a sale to someone else. A representative said that HP had theorized a truly distinct company would be in the "best interests of HP's shareholders, customers and employees." The company still had to take the 12 to 18 months to explore the costs of such a move, including whether or not the offshoot would need to take on new staff with HP not providing some of the resources....

A Showpiece E-Book for iPad

Blogging in The New York Times, technology columnist David Pogue calls Our Choice ? Apple awards CEO Tim Cook one million stock shares - if he stays until 2021

Now that Tim Cook is CEO of Apple, how do you ensure you keep him at the company's helm? How about by awarding him one million shares of Apple's stock. A form 8-K filed with the SEC gives the details:

In connection with Mr. Cook's appointment as Chief Executive Officer, the Board awarded Mr. Cook 1,000,000 restricted stock units. Fifty percent of the restricted stock units are scheduled to vest on each of August 24, 2016 and August 24, 2021, subject to Mr. Cook's continued employment with Apple through each such date.

Cook will receive half a million shares in five years, and the other half million in ten. That's got to be a major incentive both for staying on with Apple and ensuring the company continues to run well. According to MacRumors, that stock is worth just over US$383 million today.

It looks like we'll be saying "Apple CEO Tim Cook" for quite a while.
